Interesting Song for your Consideration...

I heard one of my favorite Christian radio hosts talking about this song by Point of Grace... Thought ya'll might be interested in hearing some of his comments and some of mine (the comments are in capital letters).

I am so disappointed in most of the "Contemporary Christian Music" on the radio today. It seems that it is getting more and more shallow. Check this out... if you can bear it. This is secular humanism at its best. You wouldn't even be able to tell that it's a Christian song!
(Read through the lyrics first and then go back through and read the comments).

(By Point of Grace)
Verse 1:
Wake up to the sunlight
With your windows open
Don't hold in your anger or leave things unspoken
Wear your red dress
Use your good dishes
Make a big mess
and make lots of wishes (MAKE LOTS OF WISHES? HOW ABOUT PHIL. 4:6)
Have what you want (WHAT ABOUT BEING CONTENT? PHIL. 4:12)
But want what you have (THERE'S A LITTLE CONTENTMENT)
And don't spend your life lookin' back (NO, DON'T SPEND YOUR WHOLE LIFE ON IT, BUT DO GRIEVE OVER YOUR SIN. 2 COR. 7:9-11)

Chorus:
Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
You won't regret it (WHAT IF YOU TAKE A FEW CHANCES THAT SHOULD BE REGRETTED?)
Lookin' back from where you have been
Cuz it's not who you knew (WHAT IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW JESUS? THEN IT MATTERS!)
And it's not what you did
It's how you live (SO ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT YOU'VE LIVED A FUN LIFE FULL OF TAKING CHANCES, WEARING A RED DRESS, MAKING MESSES, AND USING YOUR BEST DISHES? THAT SOUNDS REALLY FUN, BUT IS THAT REALLY WHAT MATTERS?)

Verse 2:
So go to the ballgames
And go to the ballet (THEY ARE MAKING A LIST HERE OF THINGS YOU SHOULD DO TO LIVE WELL, AND THERE IS NO MENTION OF BEING DEVOTED TO CHRIST. BUT THEY DO MENTION GOING TO BALLGAMES AND BALLETS. HMMM.)
And go see your folks more than just on the holidays
Kiss all your children
Dance with your wife
Tell your husband you love him every night
Don't run from the truth
'Cause you can't get away
Just face it and you'll be okay (WHAT ABOUT THE NEED FOR FORGIVENESS? "JUST FACE IT AND YOU'LL BE OKAY?")

Chorus:
Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
You won't regret it
Lookin' back from where you have been
'Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live (IT IS ABOUT WHAT YOU DID, THOUGH. IF YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN, PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE IT. THERE SHOULD BE A CHANGE IN YOU. I DON'T THINK PEOPLE WILL KNOW THAT YOU'RE A CHRISTIAN JUST BY SEEING YOU LIVING IT UP. MATT. 5:13,14)

Bridge:
Oh wherever you are
and wherever you've been
Now is the time to begin

Verse 3:
So give to the needy
And pray for the grieving (THE ONLY REFERENCE TO ANYTHING HOLY)
E'en when you don't think that you can
'Cause all that you do is bound to come back to you (A LITTLE KARMA MESSAGE? WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND?)
So think of your fellow man
Make peace with God and make peace with yourself (MAKE PEACE WITH YOURSELF? THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE "LOOK AFTER #1" MESSAGE OF TODAY.)
'Cause in the end there's nobody else (WHAT ABOUT THOSE YOU'VE WRONGED? 2 COR. 7:11)

Chorus:
Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
'Cause you won't regret it
Lookin' back from where you have been
'Cause it's not who you knew (ACTUALLY IT DOES MATTER. MAYBE THEY COULD MENTION THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING CHRIST SOMEWHERE IN THE SONG!)
And it's not what you did
It's how you live

'Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live

That's the end of the song. What do you think? I'm not saying that every Christian song has to have a sermon in it, but I am always disappointed when Christian writers confuse what is truly important. I do love some mushy-gushy romantic country/secular songs, but not on Christian radio. I would love to hear your thoughts...

We heard that song on the radio and also were questioning it. You have a very good point about its shallowness. There is nothing Christian about the song. I think Christian radio stations sometimes put songs on that sound profound but really make no sense at all. I got hung up on the lyric, "And it's not what you did, it's how you lived." Isn't what you did how you lived? I enjoyed the post, look foward to more. Hope you all are doing well.

I heard Todd speak about this song on their radio program. I think it is
just one more evidence of an already established trend toward the "dumbing
down" of the gospel. When we now say that songs like this are "Christian"
is when we will justify whatever sounds and feels good to us a being
Christian too. I have no problem with a song like this because it is
innocent enough if you observe the lyrics. Just don't call this Christian
music (which should be God-focused and worship centered)because by doing so
we dilute the message of the gospel which is extremely dangerous unless you
are just trying to attain "Your Best Life Now." Paul tells us clearly in 1
Corinthians 1: 21 that God chose the "folly of what we preach" to save the
lost anyhow. Thank the Lord He did not leave it up to music. :)
